The EVA Air Sunshine Coast Marathon Festival is on Sunday 2 August 2026, based at Alexandra Headland — and this is our home race. BibBuddy is built on the Sunshine Coast, we run these beachfront paths year-round, and this is the race-week guide we'd hand a mate: the new course, the bib-collection catch, race-morning logistics, and everything in between. Three weeks out, here's what you need to know.
The single-lap course: why it's a PB machine
The marathon runs the single-lap course again in 2026 — the same format as last year, which replaced the old multi-loop layout and which runners have genuinely loved. Fewer turnarounds, a cleaner and more consistent race along the coastline, and it stays flat, fast and AIMS-certified. What that means:
- It's a genuine PB course. Predominantly flat beachfront running, minimal turns, cool winter air — few Australian marathons give you a better shot at a personal best.
- Times count. AIMS certification makes finishes eligible as Boston Marathon qualifiers and for World Marathon Majors qualifying standards.
- One lap, one story. No repeating scenery, no lap-counting mental games — just a continuous route along the Alexandra Headland, Mooloolaba and Maroochydore coastline.
This is one of the best courses in the country to do it — flat, certified, and run in cool, dry Queensland winter conditions. If a qualifying time is your goal, the single-lap format only helps: fewer turnarounds means less braking and re-accelerating.
The festival at a glance — every distance
It's a genuine festival, not just a marathon — a full day of racing from elites to families, all starting and finishing in front of the Alexandra Headland Surf Club on Alexandra Parade:
| Event | Distance | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| EVA Air Marathon | 42.195km | Single-lap course. AIMS-certified, Boston qualifier eligible. Early start (~6:00am — confirm in your race info). |
| McDonald's Half Marathon | 21.0975km | Single-loop beachfront course; the festival's biggest field. |
| Westpac 10KM | 10km | Fast, flat and popular — sells through quickly. |
| Cricks 5KM Run / Maroochy RSL 5KM Walk | 5km | Run or walk options on the same picturesque stretch. |
| RMH 2KM Mini Marathon | 2km | Kids, families, prams and wheelchair entrants welcome — timed so parents can race a longer distance first, then run with the kids. |
Wheelchair categories run across the distances, and the event has raised over $1.6 million for charity since it began in 2012. Start times are staggered through the morning — check the official timetable for your exact wave.
Bib collection: times, place, and the race-day catch
This is the rule that catches people out. Bibs and merchandise are collected at Buhk Park, Alexandra Headland, in the days before the race — and not on Sunday morning. Plan your travel around it.
| Day | Collection hours |
|---|---|
| Thursday 30 July | 2:00pm – 6:00pm |
| Friday 31 July | 9:00am – 5:00pm |
| Saturday 1 August | 8:00am – 4:00pm |
Two useful details: someone can collect your bib on your behalf with a copy of your registration confirmation email — handy if you're arriving late Saturday. And bib personalisation closed on 22 June, so your name's on it (or isn't) already. As always, double-check the official race pack collection page for any late changes before you travel.
The course: what you're actually running
The route hugs the coastline through Alexandra Headland, Mooloolaba and Maroochydore — white-sand beaches on one side, ocean views nearly the whole way, with on-course entertainment and strong local crowds before a carpet "hero" finish at the surf club. What that means in practice:
- Flat, but not featureless. There's gentle undulation around the headland itself — nothing that should change your pacing plan, but don't expect a pancake for every single kilometre.
- Exposed beachfront sections. The scenery comes with ocean breeze. On a still morning it's perfect; if there's wind, the open stretches are where you'll feel it — tuck in with a group rather than fighting it alone.
- Spectator-friendly. The coastal path layout means supporters can see you multiple times with short walks — great for families, and great for you at 35km.
- Aid stations at regular intervals with water and electrolytes, more frequent on the marathon and half. Details come in your pre-race communication.
Race morning: arrival, parking & transport
The marathon starts very early — around 6:00am, with arrival recommended about an hour before at Alexandra Parade. (Published times have varied slightly between sources this year, so treat your official race-week email as the source of truth.) The practical plan:
- Stay close if you can. Alexandra Headland, Mooloolaba and Maroochydore put you within a short walk or drive of the start — a 5:00am start-line arrival is far kinder from 2km away than 40 minutes down the motorway. Our accommodation guide breaks down the zones.
- Park N Ride shuttle (the smart option): the event runs official Park N Ride shuttle buses from Kuluin (Maroochydore Football Club, 462 Maroochydore Rd) and Buderim — secure parking, a ~30-minute ride, and a drop-off about 200m from the start line. You pre-book the inbound trip only; return buses run frequently all morning, and the parking sites close at 1:00pm. Bookings are limited and close ahead of race day — check the official Park N Ride page now, because it does fill.
- Driving in? Know the Bli Bli closure. The southbound Sunshine Motorway closes from 5:00am at the Bli Bli roundabout with diversions through Bli Bli — the organisers advise skipping the Sunshine Motorway exit from the M1 entirely and using the Maroochydore Road exit instead. Street parking near the precinct fills very early; paid options include PARKnGO Mooloolaba (Cnr Smith St & First Ave, ~2.1km) and PARKnGO Maroochydore.
- Ride a bike or scooter: a staffed, secure BikePark at Cooloolathin Park on Alexandra Parade sits metres from the start line, open 5:00am–1:00pm — honestly the most stress-free arrival if you're staying locally. Pre-register your device via the event site.
- Public transport: Sunbus services run to the area from the major Sunshine Coast hubs — check race-morning timetables, as the early marathon start is before some first services.
- Warmth at the start: it'll be 12–15°C in the dark. Bring a throwaway layer or an old jumper for the start pen.
Still need a bed near the start?
Three weeks out, Alexandra Headland and Mooloolaba are booking out. BibBuddy helps runners share race-weekend stays — split an apartment near the start with others racing the same morning and make that 5am walk to the line easy.

Weather & what to wear
Early August is exactly why this race exists when it does: Queensland winter. Typical race-morning conditions are 12–18°C, clear skies, low humidity — close to ideal marathon weather. The coastal position adds ocean breeze, which can make the pre-dawn start feel cooler than the number suggests. The playbook: dress for the run, not the wait (singlet/tee plus a discardable layer), and if it's breezy, remember the exposed beachfront stretches will be where you feel it most.
Pacers, the Atlas Majors Medal & the 2032 connection
- Pacers: the Ray White Pace Runners program fields pace groups across target finish times — genuinely useful on a flat course where even pacing is the whole game. Check the pacers page for available groups.
- Atlas Majors Medal: finish a full marathon at all four Atlas Events festivals — Hobart, Brisbane, Cairns and Sunshine Coast — and you earn a special medallion. If you're collecting, this race is one of the four.
- The 2032 connection: the Sunshine Coast region is set to host the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic marathon. You're racing the coastline the world will watch in six years — not a bad line for the post-race story.
Still need an entry — or holding one you can't use?
Three weeks out, both sides of this are time-critical:
- Chasing an entry: check the official site for remaining places by distance — the event has sold out before. If your distance is gone, an official transfer from a runner who can't race is the legitimate way in. Distance changes are subject to availability.
- Can't run yours: the refund windows closed on 22 June, so a transfer is your remaining move — and the official transfer deadline lands in the days before race weekend. After it passes, the organiser steps back and any handover becomes a private matter between runners, which is exactly when scams thrive. Act now, not race week.
The full step-by-step — deadlines, fees, the in-person desk, and the official scam warning — is in our Can't Run Sunshine Coast Marathon 2026 guide. And whichever side you're on, only ever complete the handover through the official process so the bib ends up in the right name — our bib-safety guide covers the red flags.

Frequently asked questions
When do I collect my bib?
At Buhk Park, Alexandra Headland: Thursday 30 July 2:00–6:00pm, Friday 31 July 9:00am–5:00pm, or Saturday 1 August 8:00am–4:00pm. There's strictly no collection on race day, so if you're travelling up, arrive by Saturday afternoon at the latest. If you can't make any window, someone can collect on your behalf with a copy of your registration confirmation email. Confirm the latest details on the official collection page before you travel, in case anything shifts in race week.
Is the Sunshine Coast Marathon good for a PB or Boston qualifier?
Yes — arguably the best in Queensland for it. The single-lap format, the predominantly flat beachfront profile, cool dry winter air, and AIMS certification (making times Boston-qualifier eligible) combine into a genuinely fast setup. The variables to respect are ocean breeze on the exposed sections — tuck into a group if it's windy — and the early start, which rewards a well-rehearsed race-morning routine. Use the pace groups if one matches your target; even pacing is everything on a flat course.
Where should I stay?
As close to Alexandra Headland as you can get — the start and finish are both at the surf club, so Alexandra Headland itself, Mooloolaba and Maroochydore are the prime zones, all within an easy walk or short drive. With a ~6am marathon start, minimising race-morning travel is worth real money. Our full Sunshine Coast Marathon accommodation guide ranks the areas and covers race-morning logistics from each; sharing an apartment with other runners is the reliable way to stay close without overpaying this late.
How does the Park N Ride shuttle work?
Official shuttle buses run from secure parking sites at Kuluin (Maroochydore Football Club) and Buderim, dropping you about 200 metres from the start line after a roughly 30-minute ride. You only book the inbound trip — return buses run frequently back to your parking site through the morning, and the parking sites close at 1:00pm. It's the least stressful way to drive to this race, especially with the Bli Bli motorway closure in play, but bookings are limited and close before race day, so lock it in early via the official Park N Ride page rather than assuming there'll be space in race week.
Can spectators follow the race easily?
Very — it's one of the most spectator-friendly marathons in the country. The coastal path layout means supporters can catch you at multiple points with short walks between them, and the festival precinct at Alexandra Headland has entertainment, food and the finish-line atmosphere all in one place. The 2km Mini Marathon is timed so parents can race a longer distance in the morning and still get back to run with the kids — genuinely family-built scheduling.
What if I entered but can't race now?
Your refund options have passed (the final 25% window closed 22 June), so the move is an official transfer to another runner before the transfer deadline — which falls in the days before race weekend. Don't leave it: after the cut-off the organiser is no longer involved and informal handovers are where people get burned. The complete process, deadlines and fees are in our dedicated transfer guide, and BibBuddy can help you find a verified runner to take the place.
