Your options at a glance
Gold Coast Marathon's policy is straightforward but firm: no refunds, no deferrals, no rolling entries to 2027. There is no virtual event option for 2026. If you've entered and can't race, your realistic options are:
| Option | Available? | Deadline | Cost to you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transfer to another runner | ✅ Yes — window open now | 24 May 2026 | $20 fee deducted from refund |
| Change to a shorter distance | ✅ Yes | Until entries close | No refund on downgrade |
| Change to a longer distance | ✅ Yes | Until entries close | Pay the price difference |
| Refund | ❌ No | — | — |
| Defer to 2027 | ❌ No | — | — |
| Virtual event | ❌ No | — | — |
The transfer window opened 24 March and closes Sunday 24 May 2026. After that date, no transfers are possible through any official channel. If you know you can't race, start finding a buyer immediately — don't wait until May.
Official transfer process — step by step
All transfers must go through the official Update My Entry portal. The URL is gcm26.emq.events/updatemyentry — the organisers specifically warn that you should verify the link starts with https://gcm26.emq.events/ to avoid phishing sites.
Go to gcm26.emq.events/updatemyentry. You need your original confirmation email and your confirmation code (found in that email). Do not use any other link — verify the URL starts with https://gcm26.emq.events/
From your event dashboard, choose the Transfer option. This initiates the official process — once submitted, the transfer is irreversible.
Enter the new runner's first name, last name, and email address carefully. They receive an invitation email from [email protected] to complete their registration.
The new runner follows their invitation link, fills in their details, and pays the current entry fee (not your original price — current pricing applies at the time of transfer). They are now the officially registered entrant.
Once the new runner completes payment, you receive a refund to your original credit card minus the $20 transfer fee. Refunds are processed within approximately one week. If the card refund fails, the new runner provides bank details and covers any transfer fees.
The Gold Coast Marathon organisers explicitly state: "All money transactions are handled through the registration portal and not between individuals — DO NOT PAY THE TRANSFEREE FOR YOUR ENTRY." Any financial arrangement you make privately is separate and entirely between the two of you. The official refund process handles the registration fee automatically.
Transfer deadline and what happens after
The transfer window runs from Tuesday 24 March to Sunday 24 May 2026. This is a hard deadline — the portal closes on that date regardless of circumstances.
After 24 May, the only possibility is contacting the organiser directly at [email protected] in cases of documented medical emergency or other exceptional circumstances. This is entirely at the organiser's discretion — they have no obligation to assist and it is not advertised as an option. Do not rely on it.
Once you submit the transfer in the portal, it cannot be undone. Make sure you have a confirmed buyer before initiating — entering the wrong email address or transferring to someone who doesn't complete their registration creates complications that require direct contact with the organiser to resolve.
Fees — what you get back, what the new runner pays
What you (the original entrant) receive
You receive a refund of your original registration fee to your original credit card, minus the $20 transfer processing fee. This is processed within approximately one week of the new runner completing their payment. Any private arrangement you've made with the buyer (e.g. asking them to contribute toward your registration fee) is entirely separate.
What the new runner pays
The new runner pays the current entry fee at the time of transfer — not what you originally paid. If prices have increased since you registered (common as the event approaches capacity), the new runner will pay more than you did. Factor this into any conversation with potential buyers — they may be paying significantly more on top of whatever you've agreed privately.
Gold Coast Marathon is not a World Major — entries are available and not artificially scarce. The running community norm is to ask for a partial contribution toward your original registration cost, not to profit on the transfer. Buyers are already paying the current entry fee through the portal on top of anything agreed privately.
Changing distance instead of transferring
If you can still race but want to change distance — say you've been dealing with an injury and want to drop from the marathon to the half — a distance change through the same portal may be a better option than transferring out entirely.
- Upgrading (e.g. 10km → Half → Marathon): Pay the price difference at current pricing. Subject to availability — popular distances can close.
- Downgrading (e.g. Marathon → Half → 10km): No refund issued on the price difference.
- Deadline: Until entries close for each event (8pm Friday for Saturday races; 4pm Saturday for Sunday races).
- After 30 May 2026: Distance changes are still possible but you'll receive a new race number and lose any personalised name or nickname printed on your bib.
Distance changes are processed through the same Update My Entry portal at gcm26.emq.events/updatemyentry.

How to find a buyer
Finding a buyer used to mean posting in running Facebook groups and hoping for the best. It still works — the Gold Coast Marathon community is large and active — but it's slow and carries genuine scam risk on both sides.
BibBuddy is a free platform built specifically for bib transfers. You post your entry with your verified runner profile, interested buyers can see it's a real listing from a real person, and both parties proceed through the official portal once they've found each other. It's the same community approach, with the trust layer that Facebook groups can't provide.
For Gold Coast Marathon specifically, demand from buyers tends to spike in May as the transfer deadline approaches and runners who missed out on entries realise there's a window. Listing early gives you the best chance of finding a buyer before the 24 May deadline.
Staying safe — the official scam warning
The Gold Coast Marathon organisers, race social channels, and running community groups all flag bib transfer scams regularly. The most common pattern: a seller takes payment from multiple buyers for the same entry, completes no official transfers, and disappears before race day.
The organisers are explicit: transfers will only be completed via the official portal. Race bibs are non-transferable and must be collected in person by the registered entrant — meaning a buyer who pays for a bib without completing the official transfer will show up to bib collection and find the entry is still in the seller's name.
Red flags to watch for as a buyer
- Seller asks for payment before initiating the official transfer — once the transfer is in the portal, you'll receive an invitation email; pay after that
- Pressure to pay via PayID, bank transfer, or cash — these are irreversible with no buyer protection
- Seller won't share their original confirmation email — any legitimate seller has this instantly
- Link doesn't start with https://gcm26.emq.events/ — phishing sites mimicking the portal exist; verify the URL
- Price significantly above the original registration fee — a warning signal, not standard practice
Safe transaction checklist
- ✅ Ask the seller to show their original confirmation email (name, distance, event visible)
- ✅ Agree on any private arrangement before anything is initiated
- ✅ Wait for your invitation email from [email protected] before paying
- ✅ If you must pay before the invitation arrives, use PayPal Goods & Services — not Friends & Family, not PayID
- ✅ Verify the portal URL starts with https://gcm26.emq.events/ before entering any details
- ✅ Both parties receive official email confirmation before considering the transaction complete
Agree privately → seller initiates transfer in portal → you receive invitation email from [email protected] → you pay the seller → you complete registration in the portal. This order protects both parties.
Bib collection for transferred entries
Bibs for Gold Coast Marathon are not posted and cannot be collected on race day. Collection is at the ASICS Sport & Leisure Expo, held in the days before race weekend. Exact expo dates and times are released closer to the event — check the official Gold Coast Marathon website for confirmed details.
For transferred entries, the new runner receives a fresh bib under their own name. The original entrant's bib is deregistered. The new runner must collect in person at the expo — there is no proxy collection option for bib pickup.
If the new runner does not collect their bib at the expo before race day, they cannot race. Make sure any buyer understands this — they need to be in Gold Coast for the expo, not just race day.
Frequently asked questions
Can I defer my entry to Gold Coast Marathon 2027?
No. Gold Coast Marathon does not offer deferrals. You cannot roll your entry over to any future year. Transferring to another runner before 24 May is your only option for recovering any of your registration fee.
I missed the 24 May deadline. Is there anything I can do?
Contact the organiser at [email protected] and explain your circumstances. In genuine medical emergencies or exceptional cases, the organiser may consider a no-fee, no-refund transfer at their discretion. This is not an advertised option and there is no guarantee — but it's worth contacting them directly. After race day, the entry has no value.
Does the new runner get a different bib number?
Yes — the new runner receives a fresh bib in their own name. Your original bib number is deregistered. Both parties receive updated email confirmation once the transfer is complete.
Can I transfer a charity entry?
Charity entries are typically linked to specific fundraising commitments and may not transfer in the same way as standard entries. Contact the charity directly — they generally want to find another runner willing to take on the fundraising obligation rather than lose the entry entirely.
I'm the buyer — when should I pay?
After you've received the invitation email from [email protected] confirming the transfer has been initiated in the portal. This proves the entry exists and is being transferred to you specifically. Don't pay the full amount before this email arrives — a small deposit via PayPal Goods & Services to secure the seller's commitment is reasonable, but full payment upfront is not.
Can I sell my entry for more than I paid?
There's no rule preventing it, but the running community strongly discourages pricing above the original registration fee. Gold Coast Marathon entries are not artificially scarce — a buyer who feels gouged will find another listing or wait. Most sellers ask for a partial contribution toward their original cost.
