UTA 2026 has now run — planning for 2027

HOKA Ultra-Trail Australia by UTMB ran 14–17 May 2026 at Katoomba in the Blue Mountains. UTA 2027 is expected mid-May 2027. Exact dates and entry opening have not yet been announced. This guide covers how UTA transfers work, what UTMB Index you need to enter, and how to position yourself for 2027.

UTA 2027 — what we know so far

UTA 2027 is expected in mid-May 2027 at Scenic World, Katoomba in the Blue Mountains of NSW — the same venue and format as every previous year. Specific dates and entry opening have not been announced as of May 2026.

Based on the 2026 pattern, entry is likely to open in September 2026 with a UTMB Index priority window before general entries go live. The major distances (UTAMiler, UTA100, UTA50) sold out quickly for 2026 — anyone serious about 2027 should watch the official UTA site and have their UTMB account ready.

Distance 2026 entry fee Qualification Notes
UTAMiler (160km) $1,030 AUD UTMB Index required (50km+ result in last 36 months) Hardest to enter — UTMB Index priority window fills quickly
UTA100 (100km) $540 AUD No qualification required Sold out for 2026 within days. Enter early for 2027.
UTA50 (50km) $360 AUD No qualification required First to sell out for 2026. Most popular distance.
UTA22 (22km) $210 AUD No qualification required Sells out but slightly slower than UTA50/100.
UTA11 (11km) ~$130–$150 AUD No qualification required Entry festival distance. Usually has availability closer to the event.

Entry fees are 2026 figures — 2027 fees not yet published

The prices above are from the 2026 edition. UTA 2027 fees will be published when entries open. Based on the historical pattern, expect UTMB Index holders to get priority access before general entry opens to all runners.

UTMB Index — what it is and why it matters for 2027

The UTMB Index is the ranking system used by UTMB World Series events globally. For UTA, it determines your start group seeding and gives you priority access to the UTAMiler entry window. If you're planning to run the UTAMiler in 2027, you need to have run a 50km or longer trail race that is UTMB Index registered within the last 36 months — and have that result linked to your UTMB account.

For UTA100, UTA50, and UTA22, a UTMB Index isn't required for entry — but it does affect your start group seeding. A higher index rating places you in an earlier, faster start group, which matters on a crowded trail course.

How UTA transfers work

UTA allows official person-to-person transfers through the UTMB Participant Dashboard. Transfers are same-distance only — you cannot transfer a UTA100 entry to someone who wants a UTA50. A $55 AUD transfer fee applies and is paid by the transferring athlete (the original entrant).

The specific transfer window for UTA 2027 will be published when entries open. For 2026, the transfer deadline was 9am AEDT on 13 May 2026 — typically several days before race weekend. Expect a similar pattern for 2027.

1
Log in to your UTMB Participant Dashboard

Go to uta.utmb.world and log in with your MyUTMB account. The transfer option will only be visible while the transfer window is open.

2
Find a runner for the same distance

Transfers are same-distance only. The new runner needs a MyUTMB account. If they're entering the UTAMiler, they also need a qualifying UTMB Index result — make sure they're eligible before initiating the transfer.

3
Agree payment privately

The $55 transfer fee is charged to you (the original entrant). Any reimbursement for the original entry fee is a private arrangement between you and the new runner. UTMB does not facilitate or guarantee this payment.

4
Initiate the transfer in the Dashboard

Enter the new runner's full name and email. They'll receive an invitation to accept via their MyUTMB account.

5
New runner accepts and completes their profile

The new runner accepts the invitation, completes their mandatory gear/pre-inspection requirements, and the entry is now in their name. The $55 fee is deducted from the original entrant's refund. Both runners receive confirmation.

🚨
Never swap bibs unofficially at UTA

Running under someone else's name at a UTMB World Series event is a serious breach of terms — not just for the bib swap itself, but because mandatory gear requirements, medical information, and emergency contact details are tied to the registered runner. UTMB events operate in remote terrain. The person on the bib is who race staff can identify and assist in an emergency.

Withdrawal and refunds

UTA operates a tiered partial refund system with deadlines at various points before the race. The exact 2027 refund schedule will be published with the entry information when entries open — based on the 2026 pattern:

Refund requests go through the UTMB Participant Dashboard. If your card has been cancelled or changed since entering, notify the event team when requesting the refund.

Staying safe — avoid unofficial UTA bib marketplaces

UTA bibs do appear on Facebook, Gumtree, and various running groups — especially close to race day after the official transfer window closes. The risk is real: screenshots of "entry confirmation" can be fabricated. If someone sells you a bib for cash and doesn't process it through the official UTMB Participant Dashboard, you have no entry. UTMB has no way to verify you at check-in and you will not be allowed to race.

The only safe transfer is one that goes through the official Dashboard and results in a new confirmation email in your own name. BibBuddy helps connect buyers and sellers — but every transfer must be completed through the official UTMB portal. See the safe bib transfer guide for what to check before any transaction.

Alternative Australian trail races for 2026/2027

If you're building toward UTA 2027 or looking for a substitute race, these are the closest Australian trail alternatives — many are also UTMB Index events that will help your seeding or UTAMiler eligibility:

Event Date Distance UTMB Index?
Ultra-Trail Kosciuszko (UTK) 26–28 November 2026 Miler / 100km / 50km / 30km Yes — UTMB World Series
Tarawera Ultra-Trail (NZ) 13–14 February 2027 100 miles / 100km / 50km / 21km Yes — UTMB World Series
Great Ocean Road Running Festival May 2026 Marathon (road) Road event — not an index race, but AIMS-certified
Surf Coast Century September 2026 100km / 50km Check UTMB Index registration at time of entry

Ultra-Trail Kosciuszko is a direct UTA Index builder

UTK (November 2026) is a UTMB World Series event in the Snowy Mountains. Finishing UTK50 or UTK100 earns you an UTMB Index result that counts toward your UTAMiler eligibility for 2027. If you're aiming for the UTAMiler in 2027 and don't yet have a qualifying 50km+ result, UTK in November is the best Australian option before the UTA 2027 entry window opens.

Frequently asked questions

When will UTA 2027 entries open?

Not announced yet as of May 2026. Based on the 2026 pattern, expect entries to open in September 2026 with a UTMB Index priority window before general entries go live. Watch the official UTA site at uta.utmb.world and sign up for their newsletter to be notified.

Do I need a UTMB Index to enter UTA 2027?

For the UTAMiler (160km), yes — you need a 50km or longer trail running result from a UTMB Index registered event within the last 36 months. For UTA100, UTA50, and UTA22, no qualification is required. The UTMB Index does affect your start group seeding for all distances.

I have a 2026 entry and couldn't race. What happens to it?

If the 2026 transfer window has closed and you didn't transfer your entry, the place is forfeited. UTA does not carry entries forward to the following year as a general deferral policy. Some individual circumstances (medical, pregnancy) may be considered — contact the event team directly at [email protected]. For 2027, you'll need to re-enter through the standard entry process when it opens.

Can I transfer my entry to a shorter or longer distance?

No — UTA transfers are same-distance only. You cannot transfer a UTA100 entry to someone wanting a UTA50. If you want to change your own distance, that's handled through the Participant Dashboard as a separate category change process (subject to availability and additional fees if upgrading).

How do I check if a race is UTMB Index registered?

Go to utmb.world and search for the event in the UTMB Index race database. Most major Australian trail races are now UTMB Index events. If you're running a race specifically to qualify for the UTAMiler, confirm Index registration before entering — not all trail races count.
