First, the honest situation

The Cardiff Half Marathon 2026 is on Sunday 4 October, starting at 10:00am outside Cardiff Castle. It's the UK's second-largest half marathon, around 27,000 runners, part of the global SuperHalfs series — and for 2026 it sold out through a ballot. So you're likely here for one of two reasons: you've got a place you can no longer use, or you missed the ballot and want in. Both have real answers, and Cardiff is unusually generous on the first one.

The good news — Cardiff lets you gift your entry

If you've been reading guides on London or other big races and getting bad news at every turn, Cardiff is a different story. Cardiff lets you gift your entry to another runner, completely free of charge — no transfer fee at all. It's one of the more runner-friendly transfer policies among major UK events.

Free gifting — but with one hard deadline

There's no fee to gift your place. The catch is timing: everything must be done before Wednesday 19 August 2026. After that, race packs (with each runner's medical and address details) go into production, and no transfers or booking changes are possible. Miss it and the place is locked to you.

You have a 2026 place but can't run — your options

Here's exactly what's available and what each option gets you. The single most important thing to internalise: the useful windows close 19 August, weeks before the October race.

Option Available? Notes
Gift your entry to another runner ✅ Until Wed 19 Aug 2026 Free. Your entry is cancelled (no refund to you); recipient claims it under their own name via an emailed link.
Defer to 2027 ❌ Not permitted The terms state entries can't be deferred to the following year or any other event.
Withdraw ⚠️ Within the allotted time only Fees are non-refundable unless you withdraw under the refund terms in time. Refundable registration isn't available for ballot entries.
Don't start (DNS) ✅ Always No penalty beyond the lost fee. But gifting before 19 August is far better — it gives your place to someone who wants it.
⚠️
Gifting cancels your entry with no refund to you

When you gift your place, your original booking is cancelled and you won't be refunded by the organiser. So if you want anything back, agree a private reimbursement with the person taking your place before you gift it — once it's gifted, your leverage is gone.

How gifting your entry works, step by step

Relevant whether you're gifting a place or receiving one. All of this must complete before Wednesday 19 August 2026.

1
Act before the 19 August deadline

Gifting and all booking edits must be finished before Wednesday 19 August 2026. After that, packs go into production and nothing can change. Don't leave it to the final week — give the recipient time to claim.

2
Find a runner to take your place

The organiser doesn't match people up. Most runners gift to a friend, a club-mate, or someone found through a verified running community like BibBuddy. Only deal with someone whose details you can verify.

3
Agree any reimbursement privately — first

Because gifting cancels your entry with no refund, sort any money before you gift. Use a traceable payment method, and never accept a screenshot as proof of anything. The organiser isn't involved in the money.

4
Start the gift in your booking

Use the "gift your entry" option in your Cardiff Half booking and nominate your recipient. They'll be emailed a link to claim the place and enter their own details — finish-time prediction, race-pack address, emergency contact, club, language preference.

5
Recipient completes the claim before the deadline

Use it or lose it. The recipient must finish claiming before 19 August. If they don't, the transfer doesn't finalise — and the place is gone for both of you. Chase them up well before the cut-off.

Why 19 August is a hard wall

It's worth being blunt about this, because it's where people get caught out. Cardiff posts every runner a personalised race pack containing a bib tied to their medical details, emergency contact, and address. Once those packs go into production — right after 19 August — the data is fixed. That's why there's no transferring, no editing, and no late swap after the deadline: the physical pack already says someone specific on it.

The practical takeaway: if there's any doubt you'll make the start line, decide early. An injury niggle in July that you're "probably" going to be fine for is exactly the situation where gifting before 19 August protects you — you can always be delighted to have given someone else a great race, but you can't un-miss the deadline.

Missed the ballot? Skip-the-ballot routes for 2026

The general ballot has closed and the race is sold out, but there are several official ways still in:

Route How it works Best for
Official charity place Enter through one of the event's charities, usually with a fundraising target. Cardiff is Wales' largest multi-charity fundraising event. Runners happy to fundraise — the most reliable route.
Gifted place Take on an entry from a runner who can't take part, before 19 August. Anyone who finds a runner with a spare place (this is where BibBuddy helps).
Tour operator Approved international operators bundle guaranteed entry with travel/accommodation. Handy from overseas. International runners, SuperHalfs chasers.
Business Challenge Corporate/team entry package. Workplace teams.

If you're chasing a SuperHalfs passport, note that there are also SuperHalfs charity entries — worth checking if that's your goal.

Plan B — alternative half marathons

If Cardiff 2026 isn't going to work out, here are the closest alternatives by timing and profile:

Event When Entry Notes
Dublin Marathon Sun 25 Oct 2026 Ballot / charity / transfer Three weeks after Cardiff. If you fancy stepping up to the full distance. Entry guide →
Great North Run Sep (annually) Ballot / charity The UK's most iconic half. Huge field, big atmosphere. Entry guide →
Edinburgh Marathon Festival (half) Late May 2027 First-come + official transfer portal Spring option with an official transfer system. Entry guide →
Brighton Marathon weekend Apr 2027 Open entry (sells out) Seafront racing on the south coast. Entry guide →

Sorting where you'll stay matters as much as the entry. For Cardiff, see our Cardiff Half accommodation guide for the best areas near the Castle start and Cathays Park finish.

Frequently asked questions

I've missed the 19 August deadline and now I can't run. Is there anything I can do?

Once the transfer and booking-edits deadline has passed, the place can't be gifted, transferred or edited, because your personalised race pack has gone into production. Cardiff doesn't defer entries to 2027 either. At that point the only remaining "option" is simply not starting — a DNS, nothing more. It's a hard lesson in acting early: the deadline is weeks before race day specifically so packs can be produced, and there's no flexibility once it's gone.

Someone's selling their Cardiff Half place online. Is that the same as gifting?

Only if they actually use the official gifting process to nominate you, so the entry ends up in your name with your own details and your own race pack. If they're just offering to let you run under their number, that's a bib swap — it's against the rules, the medical and emergency details on file would be wrong, and it risks both of you. If you're paying someone for a place, insist they gift it to you officially before 19 August; you should receive the claim link in your own inbox. No link, no deal.

Will I get my money back if I gift my entry?

Not from the organiser — gifting cancels your original entry with no refund to you. The only way to recover anything is a private arrangement with the person taking your place, agreed before you gift it. That's why the order matters: settle any reimbursement first, then start the gift. Once the entry is gifted, you've no leverage to ask for anything back.

I entered as part of a bundle ticket. Can I still gift or transfer?

Bundle tickets (for example a combined entry with another Run 4 Wales event) are generally non-transferable and come with their own conditions, so the standard gifting process may not apply to them. If you entered via any bundle or package, check the specific terms of that bundle or contact the organiser directly before assuming you can gift the Cardiff Half leg of it.

When does the 2027 ballot open?

Cardiff runs a ballot-reminder service you can sign up to so you're notified when the 2027 ballot opens. Given how quickly the event sells out, registering for that reminder and applying as soon as the ballot opens is the most reliable way to secure a future place. There's no general first-come entry to fall back on.
