What NZ runners need to know first

Crossing the Tasman to race in Australia has become a well-worn path for NZ runners. The logistics are straightforward — no visa required for NZ passport holders, direct flights to most race cities, and a running community that's genuinely welcoming to Kiwi competitors. But the planning details matter, particularly around accommodation.

Book accommodation the same week entries open. This is the single most important thing. NZ runners are competing for accommodation against a large local field and Australian interstate travellers, all booking at the same time. The best-located properties go first. If you wait until your flights are confirmed, you'll often find the closest zones already gone.

All prices in this guide are in Australian dollars. At the time of writing the NZD/AUD exchange rate is roughly 0.90 — so an A$300/night hotel is approximately NZ$330. Factor this into your budgeting, and keep an eye on the rate when you book.

No visa needed

New Zealand citizens can enter Australia and participate in sporting events without a visa under the Trans-Tasman Travel Arrangement. You need a valid NZ passport. Australian electronic travel authority (ETA) requirements do not apply to NZ citizens.

NZ runner verdict

Gold Coast is the default choice for most NZ runners doing their first Australian marathon — and for good reason. Direct flights from Auckland, Christchurch, and Wellington, a flat fast course ideal for PBs, and a huge NZ contingent that makes it feel almost like a home race. July timing means cool Queensland mornings. Book accommodation the moment entries open — central Surfers Paradise fills within days.

NZ runner verdict

Melbourne is the prestige option — starting inside the MCG is genuinely special, and the course through Richmond, Fitzroy, and St Kilda showcases the city brilliantly. October timing and the long weekend atmosphere make it a natural trip extension. Accommodation is more expensive than GC but Melbourne's size means more options. Plan for 4–5 nights to do the city justice.

  • Surry Hills / Pyrmont — better value, still good access via tram or walk.
Entry transfers
  • ⚠️ World Major — very limited official transfer options
  • Charity entries and ballot spots are non-transferable
  • Check official event website for current policy
  • BibBuddy community can help connect buyers and sellers
NZ runner verdict

Sydney became a World Marathon Major in 2024 which means two things: the race atmosphere and prestige jumped significantly, and entries are now much harder to get. If you have a spot, protect it — transfer options are limited. The course is hilly (don't be fooled by the Harbour Bridge glamour) but the scenery is unmatched. Book accommodation immediately after securing your entry — Sydney race weekend is the most expensive accommodation situation on this list.

  • Less oversubscribed than GC or Melbourne — easier to find a buyer/seller
  • BibBuddy covers Sunshine Coast for community bib exchange
NZ runner verdict

Sunshine Coast is the best choice if you want to combine a race with a proper Queensland holiday. The course is as flat and fast as GC but the beachside atmosphere is more relaxed. No direct flights from NZ — you'll fly into Brisbane and drive or get a shuttle (about an hour). The extra step is worth it for the Mooloolaba Esplanade experience. Extend to Sunday night minimum — the post-race afternoon on the beach is exceptional.

  • Apollo Bay — start town. Good option if you have a car.
  • Aireys Inlet / Fairhaven — mid-course villages, great value, need a car.
Entry transfers
  • Official transfers available — check event website for current year policy
  • Point-to-point logistics mean transport must also be arranged when transferring
  • BibBuddy covers GOR for community bib exchange
NZ runner verdict

Great Ocean Road is the most logistically involved race on this list for NZ travellers — fly to Melbourne, hire a car, drive 2+ hours — but the payoff is extraordinary. Running along one of the world's great coastal drives is unlike any other race experience in Australia. The course is genuinely hilly so don't chase a PB here. Come for the experience, stay for the scenery. Lorne accommodation is extremely limited — book the moment entries open or you'll be driving in from further along the coast.

Bib transfers — if your plans change

Booking a race trip from New Zealand involves more moving parts than a local event — flights, accommodation, time off work. Things change. Here's what to know about each race's transfer situation if you end up unable to go.

Gold Coast, Melbourne, Sunshine Coast, and Great Ocean Road all have official entry transfer processes. The general process is: you initiate the transfer through the race's portal, a new runner accepts and pays the transfer fee directly, and the entry moves to their name. You typically can't recoup your original entry fee — the transfer just allows someone else to run in your place.

Sydney Marathon is the exception. As a World Marathon Major, official transfers are extremely limited. If you have a Sydney entry and can't run, your options are more constrained — check the current official policy on the event website, and connect with the BibBuddy community for informal options within the rules.

⚠️
Transfer deadlines close weeks before race day

For all races, official transfer windows close 4–6 weeks before race day. If you know you can't run, don't wait — list your entry as soon as you're sure. A flight cancellation the week before the race will be outside the transfer window for most events.

Practical tips for NZ travellers

Frequently asked questions

Which Australian marathon should I do first as a NZ runner?

Gold Coast for most people — direct flights from the main NZ centres, a flat fast course that suits first-time Tasman crossers, and a huge NZ contingent that makes the logistics less daunting. If you've already done GC and want a step up in prestige, Melbourne is the natural next race.

Do I need travel insurance for a race trip to Australia?

Strongly recommended. The Australia-New Zealand travel relationship means healthcare access is reasonable, but your entry fee, flights, and accommodation represent a significant financial exposure if you're injured before the race or the event is disrupted. Make sure your policy explicitly covers sporting event participation and, ideally, race entry fee reimbursement.

Can I pick up my race bib if I arrive the morning of the race?

Almost never — all five races covered here require bib collection at an expo on the days before race day, not on race morning. This is another reason to arrive at least the day before. Check the specific event website for expo hours and locations as these vary by race and year.

Are Australian marathon entry fees refundable for NZ runners who can't travel?

Generally no — Australian marathon entries across all five of these events are non-refundable. Your options if you can't travel are to transfer your entry to another runner (where the race permits it) or to defer to the following year (some races offer deferral, check the specific event policy). This is why booking travel insurance and acting early on transfers matters.

Is there a NZ runner community for Australian races?

Yes — particularly for Gold Coast, which has a dedicated and well-organised NZ contingent. Search for New Zealand runners + the specific race name on Facebook for active groups. The shared experience of NZ runners at Australian races is a genuinely enjoyable part of the trip for many people.
